Own your audience. Build authority in your niche.
Newsletter & Thought Leadership
A newsletter is the only digital asset you actually own. Social platforms can change their algorithm, reduce your reach, or ban your account. Your email list is yours. For a senior tech professional with expertise in a specific domain, a newsletter is the highest-leverage way to build authority, maintain relationships with hundreds of people simultaneously, and create a monetizable asset that compounds with every issue you send.
This module fits you if
- Tech professionals with a specific niche and strong, defensible opinions about it
- Those who think in frameworks, essays, and systems — not just code
- People who want to maintain relationships with a large network without 1:1 calls
- Engineers who've solved problems their industry doesn't talk about honestly
- Those playing a long authority game in a domain they intend to stay in for years
It's not the right fit if
- Those who want immediate income — newsletters take months to monetize meaningfully
- People without opinions — a newsletter of neutral summaries won't attract a loyal audience
- Those unwilling to write consistently — irregular publishing destroys subscriber trust
The playbook
Zero to one — step by step.
This is not a vague framework. It's the order of operations that actually works.
Define your niche with painful specificity — 'tech' is not a niche
The newsletters that grow fastest are the ones where every subscriber thinks 'this is exactly for me.' Not 'engineering leadership' — 'engineering leadership at companies scaling from 50 to 200 engineers.' Not 'AI' — 'practical AI implementation for non-ML engineers at traditional enterprises.' The narrower your niche, the more rabidly loyal your early subscribers are, and the faster it grows through word of mouth from people who know exactly who to forward it to.
Choose your format and cadence — and commit to it publicly
Weekly newsletters build the strongest habits in subscribers but require the most consistent production. Bi-weekly is the best balance of trust-building and sustainability for most writers with a primary job. Daily newsletters only work if they're very short and very specific. Choose your format (deep essay, curated roundup, specific insight, analysis + commentary) before your cadence — the format determines how long each issue takes to produce. Then announce your cadence publicly and hold it.
Get your first 100 subscribers — without relying on luck
Your first 100 subscribers are not strangers. They're people you already know, people who follow you on other platforms, and people your existing subscribers tell. Email 50 people directly — colleagues, former managers, people from your network who fit your niche description. Post it on LinkedIn with a specific audience callout: 'If you're a [niche] and you deal with [problem], you might like what I'm building.' Cross-post to relevant Slack groups and communities. Ask your first 10 subscribers to forward it to one person.
Grow from 100 to 1,000 — distribution, not just content
From 100 to 1,000, content quality matters less than distribution quality. Collaborate with other newsletters in adjacent niches — a swap where you each mention the other's newsletter is often worth more than weeks of solo growth. Guest-write for other platforms and point people back to your subscribe page. Run a referral program (Beehiiv and Sparkloop both offer this). Speak at online events or podcasts in your space. Every single issue should have a 'forward to a friend' line with a direct subscribe link. The content gets people to stay. Distribution gets people to find you.
Monetize at 1,000+ subscribers — the three main paths
A focused list of 1,000 engaged subscribers is worth more than a broad list of 10,000 disengaged ones. Monetization paths: (1) Sponsorships — a dedicated ad or sponsor mention for $200–$1,500 per issue depending on list size and engagement. (2) Paid subscriptions — Substack or Beehiiv paid tiers work when you have a loyal audience willing to pay for your premium insight ($5–$20/month). (3) Products and services — your newsletter becomes the top of funnel for your consulting, coaching, or micro SaaS. The most financially durable newsletters combine all three.
