Fractional, advisory, and technical consulting.

Consulting with Startups

Your seniority is a product. Fractional CTO engagements, technical advisory board seats, architecture reviews, and due diligence work are the highest-dollar-per-hour activities available to senior tech professionals — and the market for them has never been larger. This module gets you from zero to your first paid engagement.

Income range $5K–$25K/month
Time to first revenue 30–60 days
Effort level Medium — relationship-driven

This module fits you if

  • Staff+ engineers, EMs, VPs of Engineering, and CTOs with startup context
  • People who've built, scaled, or shut down a startup and want to share what they learned
  • Those who enjoy strategic thinking alongside execution — not just pure coding
  • Professionals who have a strong point of view on how teams and systems should be built
  • Anyone who gets inbound interest but has no infrastructure to capture or price it

It's not the right fit if

  • Those who want fully passive income — consulting is fundamentally relationship-driven
  • Engineers who prefer pure IC work with no strategic ambiguity
  • People who haven't shipped production systems at meaningful scale

The playbook

Zero to one — step by step.

This is not a vague framework. It's the order of operations that actually works.

01

Define your consulting niche — be specific about who you help and how

The biggest mistake technical consultants make is positioning as 'available for anything.' Specificity drives inbound. Are you the person startups bring in for pre-Series A technical due diligence? The fractional CTO for B2B SaaS companies scaling from 10 to 50 engineers? The advisor who helps founding teams build their first data platform? Name the problem you solve and who has it.

Action: Write one sentence: 'I help [type of company] [achieve specific outcome] when [trigger situation].' This becomes your intro on your Slashfolio profile.
02

Set your engagement model and rate — before your first conversation

You need a rate card before you need clients. Without one, you'll undercharge in the first conversation and feel awkward raising it later. Fractional engagements typically run $3K–$10K/month for 4–8 hours/week. Advisory board equity-only is fine early if it's a company you'd work at. Due diligence reviews are typically $3K–$8K per project. Know your floor before you talk to anyone.

Action: Write down three engagement types with a rate or range for each. Put them on your Slashfolio consulting page so they're visible before a call.
03

Build your credibility signal — the professional presence that converts

Consulting clients hire based on perceived seniority and fit. Your Slashfolio profile is your credibility signal — it replaces the 'are you the right person?' uncertainty with clarity. It should show your relevant company experience, the types of problems you've solved, your point of view, and the exact engagement types you're available for. This is the page you send when someone asks 'what do you do?'

Action: Activate the Consulting module on your Slashfolio profile. Add 3–5 relevant past companies/projects and a one-paragraph 'why work with me' that's specific enough to be disqualifying.
04

Start with warm network outreach — not cold email

Your first consulting client almost certainly knows you already. Scroll through your LinkedIn connections, past colleagues, and people who've asked for your advice informally. Identify 20 people who are in a role where your consulting niche is relevant. Send a personal note — not a pitch. Something like: 'I'm starting to take on a limited number of fractional advisory engagements. [Specific thing you help with.] Would love to catch up and hear what you're working on.' This is not spam. It's networking with intentionality.

Action: Make a list of 20 warm contacts. Message 5 this week. Not to sell — to reconnect and plant a seed.
05

Land your first engagement — then systematize

Your first engagement is proof. It doesn't have to be your dream client or your ideal rate. It has to be a real engagement with a real company where you deliver real value. After that, ask for a testimonial (or a case study you can reference). Add it to your Slashfolio profile. Now you have social proof and an inbound flywheel starts to form.

Action: Set a target: one signed engagement within 60 days. Once signed, schedule a debrief call at the 30-day mark to confirm value delivery before asking for a referral or testimonial.

Who does this look like

Priya Sharma

Staff Engineer → Fractional CTO

Priya spent 9 years at three Series A–C companies, most recently as Staff Engineer at a YC-backed fintech. She knew more about scaling eng teams than most CTOs had learned in their careers — but had never packaged it as a product. She set up her Slashfolio profile on a Tuesday, posted it on LinkedIn on Thursday, and had two intro calls booked by Friday. First engagement signed at $6,000/month for 6 hours/week. She now runs three concurrent engagements alongside a 60% staff role.
